It can't be earned.
But it can be rejected.
It can't be bought.
But it can be disregarded.
It can't be forced.
But it can be ignored.
God offers you a place to belong. One to belong to.
In the beginning belonging was created. God with man and man with God. Humanity with humanity. Until belonging was broken.
The rest of the biblical story is of God pursuing the world which already belongs to him, but has lost an awareness and acceptance of that belonging. It is an invitation for us to reaccept, reengage, and reclaim our relationship. Any barriers which could prevent belonging were dealt with full and completely through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Belonging is ours to have. This restored sense of belonging is deep in the heart of God.
I will be their God and they will be my people. (Exodus 6:7; Leviticus 26:11-12; Jeremiah 7:23; Ezekiel 11:20; Hoseah 2:23; Zechariah 8:8; 2 Corinthians 6:16-17; Hebrews 8:10; Revelation 21:3)
This belonging is God's hope for you and me and us. It is his offering.
Embracing belonging - acceptance, grace, mercy, welcome . . . love - with God opens us up more fully to embracing belonging with others, too.
No one can convince you that you belong. No one can force you. But know that the invitation is open for you to look into the heart of God - the face of Jesus - and find exactly what you need and more love than you can imagine. Letting you know that you totally and completely belong.
